  • Sunday, November 28th - screening of "Poor No More" a feature length documentary about the working poor in Canada and fundraiser, 7:00 pm at the Old Firehall.  David Langille, Executive Producer will attend.  (The Yukon AntiPoverty Coalition (YAPC) is a part of  the Amnesty International film fest and are raising funds for YAPC and Canada Without Poverty.) Student Workshop on the Social Economy held in association with the 1st International CIRIEC Research Conference on the Social Economy
Victoria, British Columbia A pre-conference student Workshop on the Social Economy (SE) took place at the University of Victoria on Monday, October 22, 2007. This Workshop was open to any student (graduate or undergraduate) interested in the Social Economy. The Workshop was an interactive, student-led event, based around several themed presentations designed to enhance students research skills and expose them to methodologies for conducting Social Economy-based research. It facilitated information-sharing, networking and community-building through the use of breakout sessions and informal round-table dialogue and discussion. The Workshop offered participants a chance to get to know other students working in the SE field and to connect to one another by joining the Social Economy Student Network. <http://www.graduate.socialeconomy.info/> The Workshop built upon networks and linkages which were established among the participants of the Student Community-Based Research Workshop held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on May 28, 2007.

Social Economy Workshop in Yellowknife (September 26, 2007)
The Social Economy Research Network of Northern Canada (SERNNoCa) hosted a workshop on Wednesday September 26th at the Yellowknife United Church in Northern United Place. This workshop was an opportunity for community organizations and social enterprises to meet the Northern Social Economy Research team and discuss goals and research areas in the Northwest Territories and other northern regions. Presentations provided an introduction to the Social Economy and provided highlights of the program in terms of the North and National context. It is hoped that this first annual workshop on the Social Economy in Northern Canada will be an ongoing event to inform individuals and assist in the development of the program. It was an opportunity for participants to provide their input on research needs and interests and provide opportunities for research in their area. The program offers funding to allow for community groups to work in partnership with the academic community to address research needs. 2007 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences. This major national event is Canada's largest multi-disciplinary academic meeting. The Congress theme is "Bridging Communities: Making public knowledge - Making knowledge public". #Social Economy Local Events & Activities

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) site visit at Yukon College
Yukon College as the coordination site for the Social Economy Research Network of Northern Canada was pleased to host a site visit by two representatives from SSHRC on October 6 th , 2006. Visiting were Eric Bastien, Program Officer, Strategic Programs and Joint Initiatives, and Marc Fonda, Acting Director, Strategic Programs and Joint Initiatives, SSHRC. There was a brief review of activities of the node and background of Yukon College and the SSHRC representatives provided information on the planned evaluation process and reporting requirements. It was a very informative session and productive session particularly for Yukon College as this is our first time to administer such a grant.

SERNNoCa Steering Committee First in person meeting of the SERNNoCA Steering Committee was held on July 11-12, 2006 atYukon College in Whitehorse . This was the first planning meeting of the program to establish guidelines and procedures for research, communications and linkages to the national network.
