The quantity of research data is several orders of magnitude greater than a decade ago, and increasing at an exponential pace. Moving large data sets across networks is not an easy undertaking and requires a whole suite of specialized network and middleware tools to accomplish the task.
CANARIE and its regional partners have developed a private Internet designed specifically to support the specialized needs of research and education. The network facilitates the transport of vast amounts of data amongst local and global research and higher education institutions which would not be possible over the commercial Internet.
Within the research and education community in Yukon however, network requirements are largely dominated by what could be called small or medium volumes of data by comparison. The CANARIE Network service that connects to Whitehorse is miniscule compared to the network capacity available in southern jurisdictions and large-scale data transfers to and from Yukon are not currently feasible via the CANARIE Network connection.
The Yukon Research Centre would support an upgrade to the CANARIE Network service that connects to Whitehorse if the need for it could be identified. At this time however, the existing service is not fully utilized and an upgrade cannot be justified.
